How to Prevent Chipped Nail Polish in 7 Simple Steps (Salon Secrets from a Nail Tech)

I'm a certified nail technician and I'm eager to explain how to prevent peeling nail paint. I'm spilling the beans because salons don't want you to know their insider secrets for manicures that last a long time. You'll discover how enjoyable and straightforward it is to do your nails at home and get longer-lasting polish if you put these basic recommendations into practice. I can attest that it works—even on toes!

You might be surprised to learn that I have a license as a nail technician. Years ago, while I worked at a salon, I picked up the tips and tricks that I'm going to share with you today (yes, I still have my license renewed.) By utilizing these straightforward methods, clients frequently commented on how long their shine lasted.

The nail products I'll be discussing and sharing are listed below:

  • Block Buffer
  • Nail Tek Foundation
  • OPI Bond Aid
  • Nail Tek II
  • Nail Tek 10-Speed

You're prepared to start when you trim your nails and push back your cuticles.

Step #1: Buff your nails using a Block Buffer

Since nails are porous by nature, buffing them with a block buffer aims to extract as much moisture as possible.

Tips:

  • Never substitute a nail file for a block buffer. Nail files damage your nail by removing too much of its surface.
  • This is how you should hold your block buffer when I'm using it, as you can see above.
  • Run your nail file over the four pointed edges of the Block Buffer if this is your first time using one. Your cuticles won't be cut or damaged because this will blunt the edges.

After buffing my nails with the Block Buffer, they appeared as shown.

Step #2 – Spray your nails with rubbing alcohol.

This procedure dries out your nail bed while also removing particles from your nails.

Tip:

If you don't have a small spray bottle, you can also dip your nails in rubbing alcohol after pouring it into the bottle's cap.

Step #3 – Apply OPI Bond Aid

The most important step, and definitely NOT one that should be skipped.

The third and last step in drying out your nail bed is this one. Apply a coat of OPI Bond Aid after the rubbing alcohol has dried, just like you would ordinary nail polish. Even though they still appear very dry, that is exactly what you want!

Step #4 – Apply a base coat.

You can apply any base coat, however Nail Tek Foundation is what I would advise. The Nail Tek products not only serve as a base coat, but they also fortify your nails. Nail Tek Foundation, as you can see, provides your nails a lovely matte finish.

Tips:

  • You should seal your nail after each coat of polish by rubbing the polish brush along the edge (tip) of your nail.
  • Be very careful not to get any polish on your cuticles or the skin around your nails when you polish your nails. Having said that, if you do accidentally get any on your skin (which is kind of inevitable), you can either wait till it dries before wiping it off or use an orange wood stick (which I also use to push back my cuticles) dipped in nail paint remover.

Step #5 – Apply polish.

There are countless different nail paint brands. Apply two coats of your preferred color. You only need one layer of white on the tips if you perform a French manicure like I did today.

Tips:

  • The brilliant white you should choose for your French manicure is OPI Alpine Snow.
  • Apply one coat of OPI Throw Me A Kiss (pink with shimmer), Be There In A Prosecco, OPI Bubble Bath (pink without shimmer), or any other very light colored lacquer over your white tips if you don't like the stark white of a French manicure. Before you start, you should absolutely test it on one nail to see whether you like it.

Step #6 – Apply a top coat.

As I mentioned earlier, the Nail Tek products strengthen the nails, so while you can apply any top coat, I suggest Nail Tek II.

Tip:

Before adding your top coat, give your nails some time to dry. If you apply the top coat while they are still wet, white (or whatever color you're using) may end up on your brush. White might add a white streak to the rest of your nails, while red could tint the entire bottle of top coat pink. (Definitely not enjoyable given the amount of labor previously completed.)

Step #7 – Apply Nail Tek 10-Speed.

Although there are various drying solutions, I've used Nail Tek 10-Speed for years and would suggest it. Although the Nail Tek 10-Speed expedites drying, I usually advise waiting 30 to 60 minutes before using your nails again.

Now you know my salon's best kept secrets for preventing chipped nail polish. Remember that your polish won't stay as long if your hands are exposed to a lot of water. (You might think about putting on gloves to clean dishes, take care of the garden, etc.)

Maintenance Tip:

Every few days, you should seal the edges by going over the nail's edge with the top coat brush. Many of my clients give their nails a daily layer of Nail Tek II. By doing this, they strengthen their nails and prevent chipping of the lacquer.
